Immigration Physicals Q & A

What are immigration physicals?

An immigration physical is a physical exam you must have as part of the process of immigrating to the United States. The team at PrimeMD is certified to provide these physicals according to the standards of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Civil surgeons, designated by the INS, are the only providers who offer immigration physicals.

While the process of getting an immigration physical can seem confusing or intimidating at first, the team at PrimeMD is happy to help you through the process. They make sure you understand exactly what you need to bring to the exam and what to expect during your visit.

The purpose of an immigration physical is to identify any inadmissible health conditions that risk the health of other citizens of the United States. These include communicable diseases, a lack of vaccination against communicable diseases, physical or mental disorders associated with harmful behavior, and illicit substance abuse.

What should I bring to my immigration physical?

When you visit PrimeMD for your immigration physical, there is some information and documentation you need to bring with you. Before your visit, make sure you gather your:

  • Official photo identification (driver’s license or passport)
  • A reliable payment method for testing and immunizations
  • Written documentation of any vaccinations you cannot receive due to pregnancy if applicable
  • Form I-693
  • Vaccination records

When you leave your appointment, the team returns Form I-693 back to you filled out in a sealed envelope. You should also get a copy for your personal records. Be sure to return the sealed copy to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) at your earliest convenience.

What happens during my immigration physical?

Your immigration physical starts out just like any other physical examination at the doctor’s office. First, the team goes over your medical history and any documentation you brought with you to the exam. The team records your height and weight measurements as well as your vital signs, like your heart rate and blood pressure.

After the comprehensive physical exam, there are a few other tests and possible services you need. PrimeMD offers:

Lab testing

The team provides lab tests for communicable (contagious) diseases, including gonorrhea, tuberculosis, and syphilis.

Vaccinations and vaccination updates

Vaccinations are preventive shots that teach your immune system to recognize and fight certain infections. The team makes sure you’re up to date on all the vaccinations you need.
